On February 28, 2044, an annular, or "ring of fire," solar eclipse will occur in the Southern Ocean. The eclipse does not cross over any land other than the uninhabited South Sandwich Islands. The maximum duration of annularity for this eclipse will be 2 minutes and 27 seconds. The map below shows the path of annularity over the Southern Ocean. To experience the annular, or "ring of fire," phase of the eclipse, you must be located within the path of annularity represented on the map below. Areas outside the path of annularity will get a partial solar eclipse only.
